Building Grade

Grade II

Project Outline

The Whitaker Museum was a National Lottery Heritage Funded project, supported by Rossendale Borough Council and various other funders. The project was to undertake conservation works to the existing Grade II listed building, create a new commercial offer and education spaces. In addition, there was an exciting activity and volunteer programme developed.

Project Mandate

The project had started on site during the challenging period of the pandemic and had struggled to retain project management roles during this time. The project had become conflicted, confusing, and financially challenged. We were asked by the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) monitor to help the partners to get the project back on track to complete delivery.

Facing Challenges, Delivering Results

Due to the pandemic and the disjointed working culture that this created for everyone, as well as a lack of project management skills at the level required, there were several areas which required rapid review, including understanding changes and variations during the contract, understanding approved and current budget and funding positions, understanding the roles within the partnership, facilitating building relationships, understanding the position of the project, and ensuring accurate reporting moving forwards.

We undertook an analytical approach to unpick the variations, contract and budget, in order to fully understand the issues. We also developed processes and methods for improving the project delivery, which enabled the NLHF to have confidence in the project delivery moving forwards.

In addition to this, our communication skills enabled the client, team and funders to come back together again, whilst improving their relationships to continue the journey in a more effective and happy manner.
