Project Outline
Berwick Barracks is the first ever purpose-built barracks in England. Under the Guardianship of English Heritage, it’s listed as Grade I, adjacent to a Scheduled Ancient Monument and
sited within the town centre. Northumberland County Council, the Kings Own Scottish Borders and The Maltings have come together with English Heritage to form a partnership.
The vision is to create a thriving cultural hub and visitor destination within Berwick, bringing a much-needed boost back to the site and bringing some of the empty spaces back into use. The project aims to boost the town’s economy and profile while ensuring the survival of this historic landmark.
Project Mandate
Berwick Barracks has a number of phases, which include five culturally-driven projects, a residential scheme and an opportunity to bring commercially viable solutions to the barracks. Each project has its own deliverables, lead partner and governance requirements. We have been appointed as programme manager on behalf of the partnership to bring these strands together to manage the programme, the interfaces and the reporting. This also includes reporting to multiple funders, managing complex stakeholder and risk management.
Facing Challenges, Delivering Results
Our skills in lateral planning and thinking with our experience of complex projects and managing interfaces were exactly what English Heritage were looking for to help drive this project forwards. The partners and stakeholders have their own aspirations, expectations, aims and objectives for Berwick and ensuring that these are co-ordinated, and work together are key to the success of this project. In addition to the programme-level skills, our experience in managing complex projects, helps us to help the partners and their project managers find solutions, develop their own skills, and understand the impacts and risks at project and programme level.
We also brought new and defined project and programme management processes,
which have helped the partners and the funders gain more confidence and certainty that The Living Barracks is an exciting and deliverable solution for a significant collection of Historic Buildings, securing the future of the Barracks and the Collections.
